Ocean vs. Air: Choosing the Right Shipping Method

Every shipment comes down to the same trade-off: speed versus cost. Ocean freight and air freight sit at opposite ends of that trade-off, and picking the right one can be the difference between a shipment that arrives on budget and one that arrives on time. Here's how to think through the decision.

Start with your timeline

Air freight moves in days. Ocean freight moves in weeks. If your shipment has a hard deadline — a product launch, a seasonal window, an event — that alone may settle the question in favor of air, regardless of cost. If the goods aren't time-sensitive, ocean freight is usually the better default.

Then look at volume and weight

Ocean freight is priced by container space, which makes it far more economical for large or heavy shipments. Air freight is priced by weight and volume together, so it gets expensive quickly as a shipment grows. As a rough guide:

• Small, light, urgent shipments → air freight
• Large, heavy, non-urgent shipments → ocean freight
• Mixed situations → ask about splitting the shipment across both modes

The fastest option isn't always the right one — it's the right one for that specific shipment.

Factor in what you're shipping

Perishable, high-value, or fragile goods often justify the extra cost of air freight simply because less time in transit means less exposure to spoilage, theft, or damage. Durable, non-perishable goods rarely need that premium.

Don't forget the legs on either end

The ocean or air portion is only part of the journey. Trucking to and from the port or airport, customs clearance, and final delivery all add time and cost on top of the main transit. A good freight forwarder accounts for the full door-to-door timeline when giving you an estimate, not just the shipping leg.
